How to use the Reliability Monitor

How to use the Reliability Monitor

Reliability Monitor provides a system stability overview and trend analysis with detailed information about individual events that may affect the system's overall stability, such as software installations, operating system updates, and hardware failures. It begins collecting data at the time of system installation.

Start Reliability Monitor

Reliability Monitor is part of the Windows Reliability and Performance Monitor snap-in for Microsoft Management Console (MMC).

Membership in the local Users group, or equivalent, is the minimum required to complete this procedure.

To open Reliability Monitor in Microsoft Management Console

  1. Click Start, click in the Start Search box, type perfmon, and press ENTER.

  2. In the navigation tree, expand Reliability and Performance, expand Monitoring Tools, and click Reliability Monitor.

Additional considerations

  • You can open Reliability Monitor in its own window by typing perfmon /rel and pressing ENTER in the Start Search box or at a command prompt.
Reliability Monitor shows you your system stability history at a glance and lets you see details on a day-by-day basis about events that impact reliability. These can be very helpful when troubleshooting issues that are happening with Internet explorer and other hardware.

Application Failures

Application failures, including the termination of a non-responding application or an application that has stopped working, are tracked in this category.

Data TypeDescription

Application

Specifies the executable program name of the application that stopped working or responding.

Version

Specifies the version number of the application.

Failure Type

Indicates whether the application stopped working or responding.

Date

Specifies the date of the application failure.

Putting it all together

In addition to identifying problems with individual applications and hardware components, Reliability Monitor's graph lets you see, at a glance, whether significant changes in stability began at the same time. Since you can see all of the activity on a single date in one report, you can make informed decisions about how to troubleshoot.
